What is a ginkgo?

ginkgo fossilGinkgo is unique.  It has no close living relatives, appearing so early in the evolutionary creative stream that its relations disappeared into the fossil record long ago.  Ginkgo itself is a well-known example of a "living fossil."

It has long been cultivated in China; some planted trees at temples are believed to be over 1,500 years old.
Ginkgos rarely suffer disease or insects, even in urban conditions. Four ginkgo trees growing 1/2 km from the 1945 atom bomb explosion in Hiroshima survived, though charred, and are alive to this day.

Both the seed and leaf of the Ginkgo are used medicinally.  The Chinese have used the seeds for thousands of years as a gentle tonic to the vital energy, and the leaf is a popular and well-researched remedy for micro-circulation, memory, and the function of the mind. -Wikipedia
